Welcome to Buxton’s traditional Carnival day Road Race organised for over 30 yrs by Buxton Athletic Club.
The race is again sponsored by Jo Royle Outdoor, Buxton’s leading outdoor suppliers who are situated on Buxton Market Place.
The course is an exactly measured 5 miles and starts on New Wye Street adjacent to Waitrose Car Park. The runners proceed down Bridge Street and past the crowds on Spring Gardens and the Quadrant. They then head along St Johns Road to Burbage and Ladmanlow before turning right along Grinlow Road. They enjoy a long downhill section on Harpur Hill Road and London Road before the final climb to the finish on High Street just outside the vault.
In 2003 there were 162 runners took part which was a small increase on the previous year. It was one of the hottest days of the year so times were slightly slower than usual. The race was won by Bashir Hussain of Stockport Harriers in 26mins 29seconds, ahead of Buxton Athletic Clubs Steve Watson in 28.04 and Phil Clapham, also of Buxton, in 28.11. The first lady home was Liz Lilley of Mansfield AC in 31.02, with Sarah Jones of Macclesfield second in 31.41 and the 2002 winner Michaela Stepto of Stockport Harriers third in 34.00. The mens team prize was won by Stockport Harriers and the ladies team prize by Buxton AC.
Several runners ran for local and national charities, raising several thousand pounds in total.
The 2007 race will start at 1.50pm and will be started by the Wells Dressing Festival Queen. The race headquarters will once again be at the St John Hall off Holker Road and runners will be able to register there on the day from 12 noon.
Thanks to members of Buxton AC, Marshals, The Police and The Wells Dressing Festival Committee without whom the race could not take place. A special thank you to our sponsor Jo Royle Outdoor and to the many local businesses who also support the race.
Have an enjoyable day. Robert Shaw, Race Director.
